StarOne Payments’ most valued asset is it’s management team. Santiago, Gonzalo, Sarah and Borja each have deep understanding and sound experience in the payments industry, each on their own field. By putting together this team with the technology and the financial resources, StarOne Payments aims to satisfy a growing need in the industry to consolidate all relevant payment methods from many different regions into one clean, seamless solution.

Meet our team
Santiago Mateos
CEO
Santiago is an Industrial Engineer and MBA graduate. He has experience in Sales teams as an Account Manager handling business for over 7M USD monthly income. He also has experience leading back-office teams, including Pricing, Audit and Customer Service. Currently he is acting as an external consultant for the Payment Service and Gateway Industry, specialized in collaborating with Expansion and New Business Development teams. Santiago started his career in Buenos Aires working in the Oil and Gas Industry where he joined the Pan American Energy Group (PAEG) in 2012 up until 2021 when he left to study his MBA in Barcelona, where he currently resides. To complete his background its relevant to mention that he holds a post-graduate’s degree in economics, and he has been part of the SAP integration project in PAEG.
Gonzalo Segade
COO
Gonzalo is a professional with over 10 years of experience in the financial/payments industry. He started his career in 2008 as a technical and then functional consultant for core banking development projects focused on microfinance institutions throughout Latin America. Following that, he joined SAP as a functional consultant where he participated on site in global banking transformation projects for customers like ATB Financial Canada, Banco Galicia Buenos Aires, Nationwide UK, Macquarie bank Australia among others, where he escalated until being the project lead as a reference person for loans, collaterals and deposits, besides managing the team relationship with the bank. After close to 6 years on that road, he joined Astropay in 2018, where he helped build the Latin American operation becoming an expert in the payments industry and a key person within the growing organisation. In the last years, Gonzalo has been leading the European and Asian expansion of Directa 24 and more recently, Gonzalo has accepted to take the challenge of being the StarOne COO role to develop the operation of this payment gateway company specifically focused on the virtual asset industry.
Borja Lizcano
CFO
Borja has spent most of his professional life in the financial services industry. He started his career in Société Générale Corporate and Investment Bank in Madrid where he worked for a year working with the Structured Products and Alternative Investments teams. He then moved to London where he worked as an investment advisor for 9 years, first at UBS Wealth Management and then at Bank J. Safra Sarasin Ltd. In 2021 he relocated to Spain and worked for a start-up company that specializes in financing R&D projects before joining Directa24 as a Treasury Specialist in May 2022 where he had been responsible for developing and keeping banking relationships, currency hedging and investments among others.
Borja is a CFA Charterholder and has a degree in Business Administration from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid as well as a finance Master from the Université Paris-Dauphine. He also passed the CFA ESG Investing exam in 2021 and is fluent in Spanish, French and English.
Sarah Callaghan
CCO
Sarah is a seasoned risk and compliance professional with 10 years of experience in the financial services industry. Currently, she serves as the Chief Compliance Officer and MLRO, overseeing StarOne Payments compliance program and anti-money laundering efforts.
Sarah’s career in risk and compliance started in Malta, where she worked for a global financial services company in the forex division. Following that, she took on the role of Head of Compliance for a B2B payments company. Her work there helped to shape the company’s culture around regulatory compliance and positioned them as a trusted partner for their clients.
In 2020, Sarah worked for an international virtual asset exchange, where she navigated the rapidly-evolving regulatory landscape surrounding virtual assets. Her work there gave her a unique perspective on the intersection of traditional financial services and emerging technologies.
Throughout her career, Sarah has earned multiple compliance-related certifications, demonstrating her commitment to staying at the forefront of best practices in her field. She brings this expertise to her current role, where she helps to ensure the company operates in a compliant and ethical manner at all times.
